A/C Adapter - These can sometimes be referred to as "Wall Adapters" because they allow you to plug your charger into a standard wall outlet.
Adapter - Not to be confused with an A/C Adapter, an Adapter is a small part that can take varying forms that makes it possible to mix electronic cigarette parts, for example adapting the screw thread between a battery and a tank. The most common style is the 510/eGo Adapter.
Airflow - Term defining the ease or difficulty of inhaling through the atomizer. The airflow depends mainly on the size of the air inlet holes. When the draw is easy, it is said to "loose", but if it is more difficult to inhale, the draw is said to be "tight". In most cases, these settings can be adjusted to suit everyone's individual needs.
All-Day - A term used for an e-liquid that one can vape all day long. Conversely, some e-liquids, usually more atypical and less ordinary, are more suitable for occasional vaping.
All-In-One (AIO) - A term used to describe an electronic cigarette that incorporates the battery and tank into one inseparable piece. A popular style for users who are looking for sleek desgins and easy of use.
Atomizer - This is the part of the electronic cigarette that contains the heating coil and that vaporizes the e-liquid. The atomizer is generally made up of a wick of fibrous silica (older models) or organic cotton (newer models), which is wrapped in a metal heating coil. Atomizers are generally separated into 2 categories: Replaceable and Rebuildable. Can also be referred to as the Coil, Burner, Heater and erroneously as the Filter.
Battery - The battery is the Lithium Ion cell that powers the atomizer of the electronic cigarette. There are 2 types: manual and automatic. A manual battery is equipped with an activation button (commonly called switch) to actuate the heating of the coil. The coil is heated when the switch is pressed. With an automatic battery, it is the inhalation of the user that triggers the heating of the coil. Manual batteries are much more widespread than automatic ones, because of their ease of use and better performance.
Bottom Coil - A term used for cartomizers and clearomizers for which the coil is placed at the bottom of the reservoir. More recent than the Top Coil configuration, the Bottom Coil configuration is more efficient and the coil is better fed with e-liquid.
Box Mod - A Mod (see: Mod) that is rectangular and in the shape of a box.
Bypass Mode - The Bypass mode is an "imitation" of a Mech Mod experience that can be found in certain Box Mods. This mode bypasses many safety protocols programmed into the Box Mod. Bypass Mode has the potential to put unsafe strain and stress on Lithium Ion batteries, which could lead to failure. Bytown Vapes DOES NOT RECOMMEND the use of Bypass Mode at any time.
Capacity (Battery) - Is measured in Milliamp Hours (mAh) and is the battery capacity in terms of duration. The higher the number, the longer the time before it needs to be recharged. At the same rate of discharge, a 2000 mAh battery will last twice as long as a 1000 mAh battery.
Capacity (E-Liquid) - Is measured in Millilitres (mL) and is the E-Liquid Capacity of the cartridge, tank, cartomizer or clearomizer depending on the style of your device. TPD restrictions across the European Union limits E-Liquid Capacity to 2mL. These restrictions are not applicable or enforced in North America.
Cartomizer - A contraction of the terms "cartridge" and "atomizer," it is a cartridge that is opaque, filled with wicking material and includes an integrated and non-removable atomizer.
Cartridge - The cartridge is the reservoir of the electronic cigarette; it holds the e-liquid for the electronic cigarette.
Ceramic - Ceramic is used in certain atomizers to support the capacity of high heat. A porous ceramic takes the place of the wick and is used to absorb the e-liquid. The ceramic is often fused with the heating wire of the atomizer.
Clapton Coil - A style heating wire overlapping a second wire which is much more fine and looks much like a guitar string. This increases the surface area of the heating wire, making more contact with the wick. The result is often more vapor, while using less power. The name of the construction is in reference with guitar strings and the famous guitarist.
Clearomizer - More commonly referred to as a "Tank," a clearomizer is a cartomizer that is clear or translucent, allowing the user to see inside. Unlike a cartomizer, the wicking materials are removed and the e-liquid is able to flow freely. The atomizers are removable, replaceable or rebuildable. Clearomizers come in all shapes and sizes and have become the industry standard for everyday vapers.
Cloud Chaser - Is a user who is interested in producing immense plumes of vapour. Cloud Chasing is a discipline of vaping invented in the US for hobbyists and even organised competition. The idea is to produce the nicest and especially largest vapour cloud in one draw on the electronic cigarette or mod. This practice requires good knowledge of the material and is therefore not recommended for beginners.
Coil - The term can sometimes refer to the entire atomizer (See: Atomizer). Although, the term "coil" really refers to the actual wire inside the atomizer that is helix shaped and heats up to produce the vapour.
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) - This term refers to the act of making your own e-liquids, building your own atomizers, or building your own Mods. Not recommended for beginners.
Dripper - The Dripper is a rebuildable atomizer that has no reservoir. It is therefore smaller in size than tank-type atomizers and simply consists of a base in which we find the connectors to assemble the coil (wick + heating wire). The filling is done by directly soaking the coil with a few drops of e-liquid. E-Liquid must be added regularly to avoid dry-hits.
Drip Tip - This is the piece that you put in your mouth to inhale the vapor from the e-cigarette. It is screwed or popped to the upper end of the atomizer. The drip tip is available in different materials: Acrylic, Steel, Wood, Teflon, Delrin etc. The diameter of the drip tip can be varied depending on the usage. Generally the large drip tips are used for cloud chasing and the production of vape. The large diameter allows the aspiration of air. The standard size for the drip tip is 510. Sometimes referred to as the "Mouthpiece. "
Dry Burn - The dry burn is a technique for cleaning the rebuildable atomizer which involves heating the coil without e-liquid and without wicking material. This burns the residues that gradually accumulate on the coil.
Dry Hit - A dry hit is characterized by a user attempting to inhale from an atomizer that has insufficient e-liquid. In these cases, the wicking material is too dry and begins to burn. The user is inhaling hot smoke from the burning wick. A bitter, burnt taste is usually accompanied with a painful dry cough. After a dry hit, the atomizer is generally ruined and will need to be replaced or rebuilt to get rid of the bitter, burnt taste.
E-Cig - A contraction of "Electronic" and "Cigarette."
E-Liquid - A mixture composed mainly of vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), flavourings and optional nicotine. It is the main consumable in an electronic cigarette. It is poured into the reservoir of the e-cigarette and is transformed into vapour when heat is generated by the atomizer. The flavours available on the market are numerous and the available nicotine dosage usually ranges from 0mg (no nicotine) to 24mg. Sometimes referred to as E-Juice, Vape Juice, Vape Liquid, or Vape Oil.
eGo - An electronic cigarette industry standard for thread sizing and drip tip sizing. eGo thread is defined as 12mm in diameter with 0.5mm threads in a set of 5.
Firmware - Is the computer programming integrated in the Box Mod and is responsible for safety features, user settings, and graphic display. Some Box Mods offer upgradable firmware with periodic updates to improve functions and performance.
Hit - The hit is the feeling that the smoker and vaper get in the throat during the passage of the smoke of a traditional cigarette or vapor of an e-cigarette. The higher the level of nicotine in the e-liquid, the greater is the heat and the hit, which becomes similar to that of a real cigarette. Sometimes referred to as Throat Hit.
Kanthal - A metal alloy used for the coils that are present in atomizers. Unlike alternative types of metal, Kanthal is durable enough to withstand the temperatures needed, but flexible and cheap enough to be practical.
Lithium-Ion Battery - A lithium-ion battery or Li-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery in which lithium ions move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode during discharge and back when charging. Lithium-ion batteries are common in home electronics including electronic cigarettes. They are one of the most popular types of rechargeable batteries for portable electronics, with a high energy density, tiny memory effect and low self-discharge. Lithium-ion batteries can pose unique safety hazards since they contain a flammable electrolyte and may be kept pressurized. An expert notes "If a battery cell is charged too quickly, it can cause a short circuit, leading to explosions and fires". Because of these risks, testing standards are more stringent than those for acid-electrolyte batteries, requiring both a broader range of test conditions and additional battery-specific tests. There have been battery-related recalls by some companies, including the 2016 Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall for battery fires.
Mech Mod - A contraction of "Mechanical" and "Mod," a Mech Mod is a style of electronic cigarette that contains no digital or electronic components. It work simply by manually closing the circuit with a spring-loaded button or switch. A Mech Mod has the potential to put unsafe strain and stress on Lithium Ion batteries, which could lead to failure. Bytown Vapes DOES NOT RECOMMEND the use of Mech Mods at any time.
Milliamp Hour (mAh) - The unit of measurement for the capacity of the battery.
Millilitre (mL) - The unit of measurement for the e-liquid capacity of the tank, cartridge, cartomizer or clearomizer.
Mod - Mod is an abbreviation of "Modified Electronic Cigarette." In the early years of the industry, these were devices that were modified by the end-user or even built from scratch. As the industry evolved, the definition of "Mod" has grown to include any electronic cigarette marketed with programmable settings for the user to modify, generally with a screen, function buttons and replaceable batteries.
Nicotine - Nicotine is the chemical compound found in tobacco leaves that is responsible for the enjoyment of smoking. It is an optional component e-liquid for electronic cigarettes. The dosage or nicotine content, expressed in mg/ml, usually ranges from 0 mg/ml (no nicotine) to about 24 mg/ml. Nicotine is highly addictive and habit-forming due to the instant chemical reaction that makes the user feel good or less anxious, but Nicotine alone has never been linked to cancer.
Ohm - The ohm (symbol: Ω) is the derived unit of electrical resistance, named after German physicist Georg Simon Ohm. In practical terms, the lower the resistance of your coil, the more vapor can be produced. Modern coils have resistance between 2.5 ohm (more resistance, less vapour) and 0.12 ohm (less resistance, more vapour).
Priming - A new atomizer may sometimes require priming by directly injecting 4 to 5 drops of e-liquid into the heating chamber. This will ensure the wicking material is not dry and helps avoid dry hits. The user should wait 45 to 60 seconds after filling their reservoir and inserting the new atomizer to allow the e-liquid to absorb sufficiently.
Propelyne Glycol - Propylene glycol (often abbreviated to PG) is one of two main ingredients (the other is vegetable glycerin, called VG) that make up an e-liquid. It enhances the hit when combined with nicotine and transforms into vapor when heated sufficiently. Propylene glycol is considered non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, and is also widely used in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
Rebuildable Atomizer - A rebuildable atomizer is intended and designed so that the user can replace the wicking materials and coils to suit their needs and wants. Learning the principles, techniques and controlling the assembly of these atomizers requires patience and is not recommended for beginners.
Steeping - A term used for maturation stage when preparing e-liquids. A preparation with a base of Propylene Glycol and/or Vegetable Glycerin with one or more flavours needs time to mature. Allowing the e-liquid the steep, will bring out fuller flavours and aromas.
Stick Battery - It is a rechargeable lithium ion battery that is skinny and cylindrical with a 510/eGo thread and a switch. The term is generally used for batteries with little to no setting adjustments. Capacity will generally range from 150 mAh to 1200 mAh.
Sub-Ohm - This refers to any atomizer or coil that has an electrical resistance of less than 1.0 Ohm. These atomizers produce more vapour and require battery that are very powerful. Sub-Ohm atomizers are becoming very common and can be suitable for many users.
Sweet Spot - The sweet spot is the achieved when the user settings on their Mod and Tank are combined to produce the most satisfying combination of vapour production and flavour. This is a trial-and-error process in which the user adjusts settings until the desired combination of wattage and airflow produces a superior experience. Like snowflakes, no two sweet spots are the same.
Switch - The switch is an activation button present on the battery of the electronic cigarette. By applying a simple and prolonged pressure on the switch, a voltage is applied across the coil of the atomizer and vapor is generated. By pressing the switch briefly several successive times, the e-cigarette can be turned on or off. Sometimes referred to as the "Fire Button."
Tank - Another term for a clearomizer. Often comprised of steel and pyrex glass, the e-liquid visible is able to flow freely. The atomizers are removable, replaceable or rebuildable. Tanks come in all shapes and sizes and have become the industry standard for everyday vapers.
Temperature Control (TC) - Temperature Control is mode on many Mods that requires special atomizers. With the Temperature Control, the box mod diminishes and interrupts the current. Ideally, this prevents the coil from overheating and reduces the chance of a dry hit. The temperature control requires coils made of specific metals including Ni200 (nickel), Ti (Titanium), SS (Stainless Steel).
Thread Style - "510" and "eGo" are the two standards for threads used to secure an atomizer to a battery. Many stick batteries are equipped with both 510 and eGo threads for maximum compatibility. Mods are equipped with only 510 threads. 510 thread is defined as 7mm in diameter with 0.5mm threads in a set of 10. eGo thread is defined as 12mm in diameter with 0.5mm threads in a set of 5.
Vaping - We probably should have started here. Vaping is to the electronic cigarette what smoking is to the traditional cigarette. When you inhale vapour from an electronic cigarette, you are vaping.
Vaper - The user of the electronic cigarette. People who smoke, are smokers. People who vape, are vapers.
Variable Voltage (VV) - The term refers to the ability to adjust the output voltage of an electronic cigarette to adjust the power, and thereby the overall volume of vapour. The adjustment usually requires knowing the resistance of the atomizer, to adjust the voltage according to "Ohm's law": P=V²/R
Variable Wattage (VW) - The most common mode of vaping. Variable Wattage mode offers the same adjustments as VV: adjusting the vaping power and the vapor volume, but the process is simpler. It is generally sufficient to set the mod to the desired wattage, and the power output will always be identical, regardless of the type of atomizer connected or its resistance. Many atomizers will have the recommended wattage settings engraved directly on them.
Vegetable Glycerin - Vegetable glycerin (often abbreviated to VG) is one of two main ingredients (the other is propylene glycol, called PG) that make up the e-liquid for electronic cigarettes.
Wicking Material - The wick is an element of the atomizer, made of silica fiber or organic cotton, which transports the e-liquid to the coil in order to vaporize it.
Watt - The watt (symbol: W) is a derived unit of power defined as 1 joule per second and can be used to quantify the rate of energy transfer. It is the power output of your electronic cigarette. Variable Wattage is the most common style of Mod.
510 - An electronic cigarette industry standard for thread sizing and drip tip sizing. 510 thread is defined as 7mm in diameter with 0.5mm threads in a set of 10.
18650 Battery - Refers to the size classification of a lithium ion battery. Cylindrical in shape, the 18650 is 18mm in diameter and 65mm in length. Capacity and maximum output can vary.
Vaping is relatively new, and the more conspicuous elements, such as cloud chasing and sub ohm vaping have only become widespread over the past couple of years. Laws restricting vaping are starting to come out, and there’s the potential for it to be legislated as harshly as smoking. As individuals, we can help shift this in our favour by behaving responsibly and showing that not only is vaping different and healthier than smoking, it can also be accepted by the general public. But more than this, it’s about good manners. The advice below can be seen as basic decency, but it’s worth establishing a code of conduct to present vaping as a relatively harmless habit, rather than an obnoxious vice.
It’s not just places, we should also consider how we behave around other people. Here are some pointers.
Some vapers engage in ‘stealth vaping’, keeping their equipment hidden, and holding vapour in longer than usual, so it’s less visible when exhaled. This is problematic. If the aim is to deceive people then don’t do it – it’s likely you’ll get caught, and only serves to damage our reputation. However, if the aim is to remain low key in a place where vaping is acceptable, this is fine.
It comes down to basic manners. Studies have proven that there is no risk from second-hand vapour but many people don’t like to have it breathed on them. If possible, educate people but keep it brief, no one likes being preached at. Cloudchasing in public can be seen as impolite, so it’s best to do this in private.
ULTIMATELY, ALL IT TAKES IS ASKING PEOPLE IF THEY MIND.
And if they do, respect their wishes. This is a sensitive time for vapers all over the world, with many countries and states looking to enact restrictive laws. If we build a reputation for courtesy, it can only help.
The math is simple... when you switch, you SAVE!
A pack-a-day smoker can save up to $3,700 by switching to an electronic cigarette for one full year!
Summertime is here!
For many of us, it may be our first summer as an ex-smoker and as a new vaper. Here are a few tips to help improve your summertime vaping experience.
Beat the Heat… We love our Canadian summers for all the fun-in-the-sun we can pack into 3 short months, but electronic cigarettes and e-liquids perform best when stored at room temperature. Be careful where you leave your devices and e-liquid when you’re not using them. Avoid leaving them in the sun, or in a hot car where temperatures can sky-rocket. A great practice is to treat your vaping gear it like you treat your cell phone: Avoid extreme temperatures, water and dirt!
“Cannonball!”... Check your pockets before you cannonball off the dock and into the lake this summer! Delicate electronics and circuit boards do not mix well with water. If you’ve ever tried to desperately light a soggy cigarette, you may experience some unfriendly flashbacks! And even if you’re casually lounging by the pool, try to make sure you’re well away from the “splash zone.”
Life is a Beach… Blowing dust, sand and dirt can do a number on your electronic cigarette. Dirt and grime can clog air intakes and if it mixes with your e-liquid you may have an awful mess, literally, on your hands. If you’re headed to the great outdoors this summer, investing in a light, zippered, carrying case will help keep your device clean and functional.
Battery Backup… Summer in the city puts a strain on the power grid. Picture this: It’s a hot and humid 34 degrees, your whole neighourhood has their A/C pumping on full-blast, and now a severe thunderstorm comes barreling through the area. Your e-cig is at 7% battery and you are about to lose power for a few hours! Prepare yourself for the inevitable by having an extra charged battery ready as your failsafe backup!
The summer season ushers in a fast-paced, and exciting time as we cram our days full of outdoor adventures. By following a few tips and taking the proper precautions, we can make sure that a dead battery or damaged device doesn’t ruin any of our fun!
Enjoy the summer!
